Why did african elephants evolve with big ears and indian elephants with small ears?

Sometimes evolution is just happenstance. Gene for big ears is concentrated in Africa, gene for smaller ears is concentrated in India.

p.s. I believe the word is "fifty".

Why did african elephants evolve with big ears and indian elephants with small ears?
African elephants use their larger ears to cool down in the sering heat of the Savanna. Whilst in India it is hot, but it is covered by more jungle. It is also very damp. The Indian elephant has more chance of catching larger ears on the thickets of the jungle, resulting in injury, disease and possibly death.
Reply:The Idian shout at there elephants, and the Africans don't
Reply:They are different types of elephant. The Indian elephant are born with small ears and the African elephants are born with large ears. They both live in hot countries and both flap their ears to keep cool.
Reply:The elephant's ears are rich in blood veins and it uses it to cool down its body temperature. In Africa (e.g. Serengheti fields) temperatures can be very hot in the summer. Therefore the elephants there need a bigger blood network (heat-exchanger) to cool itself, hence bigger ears. When it throws water over itself or when it sweats, it wets the ears. Water evaporates from the ears, and results in cooling of the blood. Therefore cool blood goes from there to rest of the body and warmer blood arrives at the ears to be cooled down again.
Reply:Obviously mother nature always observe the law of "adaptation" wherein organisms who can survive in a particular habitat are given special traits to acclimatize themselves in that habitat. The African savannah has very extreme temperatures. It's extremely hot during the day and can be freezing cold at night. The African elephant's huge ears function as a "thermostat" for temperature regulation. Since they don't have sweat glands like humans do, you can normally see them "fanning" themselves and also using their long snouts to bathe themselves with water. In the absence of water, their large ears are the only structures capable of regulating temperature and maintaining it in its normal levels. Without it, the elephant would definitely suffer a heat stroke. In India, it's not really considered to be searing hot, but the humidity is high due to it's geographical location. Mother nature naturally selected the Indian elephant to have smaller ears because of the surrounding climate. Just like with various animals, there will always be special traits or specialized structures essential for the organism's survival.
Reply:Their ears are threaded with blood vessels so they act like radiators, cooling off when they flap them, thus helping regulate their overall body temperature. It is hotter in Africa, hence they evolved bigger ears for better cooling.
Reply:African elephants have Big-Ears because Noddy will not pay the ransom.
Reply:I believe it is because elephants wave their ears to cool their blood and that generally, it is hotter in Africa than India.
Reply:hmmm good question, heres another, why did you evolve with such a funny nose?
Reply:Here is an easy explanation: there is no such thing as evolution. God created and designed each animal differently, making sure they were built so their needs would be fulfilled. Read the article below for the answer to your question - minus the evolution part.

African elephants have larger ears than Indian, or Asiatic, elephants because they live in hotter conditions and are bigger and more aggressive and active. The huge ears of the African elephant, sometimes three and a half feet wide, enable it to hear more acutely. When the animal charges its fans out its ears, augmenting its terrible appearance and striking fear into the heart of any enemy.

The ears also present a large surface for losing body-heat. African elephants, who are at a disadvantage in the heat because of their large size, wave their ears to keep cool and to chase away flies. The African elephant is the biggest and noblest of land animals, reaching a height of 11 feet and a weight of nearly six tons.

The Asiatic elephant is smaller. It inhabits the forests of south-east Asia from India to Ceylon and Borneo. It does not like heat and seeks the deep shade of the forest. The Asiatic elephant likes bathing, and showers itself with water sprayed over its back from its flexible trunk. For hundreds of years this elephant has been domesticated and used as a beast of burden, and its relationship with man can be close. Elephants are said to have excellent memories.

How could these elephants evolve by chance? They are such amazing creatures. They are built to perfection. How did the ones just in Africa know to grow longer ears, while the other elephants remained the same. How did they know that would keep them cool? They didn't. Only God, the creator of the universe did, designing every animal, and plant, and human different and special.
