We are planting elephant ears this spring so is there a good way to start them?

it is a very hard bulb, and i was wondering if you could soak them for a day or so. also, they are the smaller ones, not the ones that look about the size of large turnip.

I plant elephant ears every year. Right now I have potted them in pots with Miracle Grow garden soil and have watered them. I have them sitting in a south facing window that gets plenty of sun. Once the chance of frost is gone here in zone 5, I plant them outside. This gives them a longer season than waiting and planting them in the ground. I hope this helps.
Reply:I grow elephant ears every year, so here is how I start them:

1. Get some gallon ziploc or other storage bags %26amp; some potting mix

2. Fill the bag about half way with potting mix, put the bulb in so that the top (the part with either a pinkish spot or what looks sort of like a point with faint rings) is upright.

3. Put a thin layer of soil over the top of the bulb, add a couple of cups of water to the bag so that all the soil is evenly moist.

4. Seal the top of the bag 3/4 of the way, or so there is an inch or two open to allow for air and moisture flow.

5. Set the bag near a heat source, next to a floor vent for a heater is great or near a radiator. Keep the soil moist.

After a week or so there should be at least a few roots, just keep the soil moist and near heat and soon you'll see a long pinkish or greenish shoot come out of the soil, as soon as that appears open the bag to about half. You might start seeing roots in the sides of the bag, cover the bag with newspaper so the roots don't get damaged by light.

After any danger of frost plant them outside. It is a great way to get them going if you are in a cold climate. They are very cold sensitive and a chill can kill them or really slow their growth. Started in bags also makes for easy transport.
Reply:Soaking is always good, don't plant deep. The quickest way is to get a friends clump and slice them into bits with a bit of tuber on each and stick into your soil, they are invasive and your friend will appreciate you taking bits of it to reduce their clump.l think there are about 4/5 different elephants ears, but they all grow in the same way.
